An architectural masterpiece and the most famerous opera house in Paris, Opera Garnier was commissioned by the Emperor Napoleon III as a home for the Paris Opera and the Paris ballet. The opulent building was completed in 1875 and is considered a prime example of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Its extravagant furnishings include a 7-ton bronze and crystal chandelier and a ceiling painting by Marc Chagall. After the opening of the Opera Bastille in 1989, Opera Garnier was renamed Palais Opera and now focusses primarily on ballet performances. The building itself can be visited daily.
